After a two year break since its last edition, Oriental Dream Festival was resumed in 2017 with much enthusiasm and motivation. The 5th edition was called Oriental Dream Weekend and had as special guest star Nadejda Stoykova, one of the most loved and appreciated dancers, teachers and choreographers in Bulgaria, often invited at international festivals.
Nadia taught 3 workshops with various themes from ballet to romantic tarab with veil and baladi from the Egyptian folklore, attended by both professional dancers, teachers and students from oriental dance schools in Bucharest and accross the country.
The Gala Show Oriental Dream took place at Palatul Copiilor in Bucharest and showed much variety, both different oriental dance schools from the Romanian community and other dance styles (indian dance, tango). The audience watched solo and group performances from a wide range of folkloric traditional styles (shaabi, khaleegy, saidi, baladi), classical Egyptian Raqs Sharki (Oum Khaltoum, romantic tarab), modern oriental dance styles (contemporary fusion, tribal fusion), drum solo, dance with props (veils, fan veils, led Isis wings, canes, assaya).
One of the surprises of the evening was Elias, one of the most appreciated percussionists in Bucharest, who offered together with the organiser Elmas, a dynamic improvisation percussion moment with live darbouka. Our special guest star Nadia performed 3 moments with different energies and feelings, from the spectacular led Isis wings show to the energetical tabla solo, a gracious romantic tarab moment with veil and a sassy stylish baladi.
Oriental Dream Weekend enjoyed lots of success in the oriental dance community in Bucharest. The positive feedback came from the participants to the workshops, from the guest performers, from the audience close to our community, but also from the curious audience, who wanted to see something new. Still with limited financial ressources and without support from sponsors, with considerable efforts, we managed to bring on the stage the value of the culture and the art of oriental dance and enjoy a successful event in Romania.
